Psychometric Tests

Tests are often used by employers to assess applicants and find the most suitable candidate. In many cases the tests used will have been specially designed to assess whether candidates posess the skills needed for that particular job.

Psychometric tests give a good indication of an applicant's potential for a role, and also allow for comparisons to be made between candidates, but although they are important, they are not the only thing the employers will consider.

Ability Tests

The most common types of test are numerical and verbal reasoning, as they are important skills for so many roles. If you are applying for a specific job in IT or project management you may also be tasked with a diagrammatic reasoning test.

It is useful to try a range of practice tests to prepare yourself and raise your confidence. You may find that completing some practice tests will highlight areas of weakness that can be worked on. A lot of the calculations included in the numerical tests relate to pre-GCSE arithmetic e.g. percentages and fractions so it would be worth reviewing these skills.

Personality Tests
These tests monitor the way you behave and respond to things, your interests, and your working style; there are no right or wrong answers. The best way to succeed in these tests is to answer honestly and avoid answering in a way which you think the employer would want hear if the answer is not true.

You can prepare by completing an online personality test which will make you more familiar with the process.

Online Practice Tests

Most sites have sample tests, or you can pay to do the real thing and receive a feedback report.
The key to all the tests is preparation and reading or listening to instructions carefully.
