Volunteering

Your career potential and your success in the job market can be much enhanced if you aim to leave Anglia Ruskin University with a portfolio that includes, for example, a good degree, some work experience and personal development skills. This is your chance to make the most of your time at university and the opportunities it throws open to you.

Who volunteers?

Anyone can volunteer - the amount of time you give is entirely up to you. In most cases you do not need experience and, where specific skills are required, specialist training will be provided at no cost to you.

All that most organisations ask for is enthusiasm and commitment whether you are into music, the environment, sport, social issues, working with children in schools or youth centres, management, computers, or administration.

What you do, when you do it, where you do it and who you do it with is up to you. Why not take a look and see what's happening on your campus?

How you can benefit:

  • Improve your chances of employment
  • Build upon your personal skills
  • Gain real work experience and broaden your perspectives
  • Benefit the local community
  • Get free training
  • Meet new people
  • Receive a certificate

I have been volunteering at RSPCA since October last year and I really enjoy it. The people there are super nice and they always help me when I have problems understanding customers. For me as an international student this is the perfect opportunity to get to talk to people. That helps me to improve my language skills a lot. And my boss, Fiona, is such a nice person. Last semester she even proof-read my assignments. The atmosphere is always nice and I do not see working there as an obligation I see it as having fun.

Furthermore volunteering is a great opportunity to dip your toe into the world of working. I have never really worked before since I started university right after finishing grammar school. Working in an almost family like atmosphere makes it so much easier to get used to it. And last but not least future employers will always be impressed by reading that you are committed to something charitable. I cannot imagine a better volunteering place.
