Outstanding individuals given Honorary awards
In October we were delighted to welcome our new Award holders, all of whom are outstanding in their respective fields - impressively, five are our own alumni. Chan Abraham
Honorary Doctor of Business
Innovative alumnus, social entrepreneur and CEO of Cambridgeshire-based Luminus Group (in 2012 listed 6th in The Sunday Times 100 Best Not-for-Profit Organisations to Work For, and three star 'extraordinary' status in Best Companies), Chan was listed as one of the UK's most people-focused CEOs by an independent employee survey.
Keith Attwood
Honorary Doctor of Business
Keith is CEO of e2v, a Chelmsford-based global company. e2v has become involved in space imaging and energy-saving industrial systems. Under Keith's leadership, new acquisitions and organic growth have seen the company double sales and diversify into new product areas.
Dr Dame Claire Bertschinger DBE
Honorary Doctor of Health Science
Dr Bertschinger selflessly worked as a nurse in impoverished and war-torn regions around the world. In Ethiopia she had the responsibility of deciding which refugees would receive Red Cross food and who would go without. Claire's work and the starving refugees' plight inspired Bob Geldof to organise Band Aid and the Live Aid fundraisers.
Professor Ian Blackshaw
Honorary Doctor of Laws
Alumnus, author and esteemed lawyer, Ian has become a leader in sports law, working with organisations including FIFA, UEFA and the International Olympic Committee, as well as high profile arbitration and mediation panels. He has maintained strong links with us as a member of our International Law Unit.
Marco Cereste
Honorary Doctor of Health Sciences
Marco spent 25 years working for the NHS in eminent positions. Now retired from the NHS, he holds many non-executive directorships at non-profit organisations, has established a group of companies and is the current leader of Peterborough City Council.
Reverend Ronald Corp OBE
Honorary Doctor of Music
Rev. Ronald Corp is a successful composer, conductor, educator, charity benefactor and Anglican Priest. In 1988 he founded the New London Orchestra to promote 19th and 20th century music to new audiences. In 1998 Ronald was ordained and was awarded an OBE in 2012 for services to music.
Nick Crane
Honorary Doctor of Science
Nick is a geographer, journalist, author, broadcaster and eminent alumnus, but mostly a traveller and explorer. One of the most recognisable and beloved personalities on British television as a result of his TV documentaries (that include Coast and Great British Train Journeys). He is also keenly involved in charity work.
Jody Cundy MBE
Honorary Doctor of Health Science
Jody Cundy is a multiple gold medal winning Paralympian (and promoter of disability sport) - firstly in swimming where he took 24 international medals. In 2005 he retrained as a cyclist, beginning a career which would add multiple gold medals, including double gold at the Beijing Paralympics and bronze in the Individual 4k pursuit at London 2012.
Arthur Edwards MBE
Honorary Doctor of Arts
As a renowned photographer, Arthur Edwards joined The Sun newspaper in 1974, working in general news until given the assignment of photographing the unknown Lady Diana. He became Diana's favourite royal photographer - 'our Arthur' - and his pictures represent a history of their lives together; from images of the courting royal couple to the famous photograph of Diana alone at the Taj Mahal.
Professor Stephen Furbur CBE
Honorary Doctor of Science
Pioneer in the field of computing, Professor Stephen Furbur was the principal designer of the ARM 32-bit processor from Acorn Computers, the descendants of which power mobile phones and flat-screen televisions. Steve is one of the founders of modern computing, recognised through numerous awards that include a CBE in 2008.
Robert King
Honorary Doctor of Laws
Robert King is an activist for justice and civil rights. Born in New Orleans in 1942, racial segregation and discrimination led to him becoming involved in the civil rights movement, joining the Black Panther Party. In 1972 Robert and two other Black Panthers were detained in Angola prison on fictitious evidence, charged in 1973 and sentenced to solitary confinement for life for the murder of an inmate, despite another prisoner claiming responsibility. He was released in 2001 after 29 years, and continues to fight for justice for those still incarcerated.
Patrick le Quément
Honorary Doctor of Technology
Patrick le Quément is an alumnus and renowned car designer. After graduating he returned to France, becoming an automotive designer with Simca and Ford. He joined Renault in 1987, and over 22 years managed the development of innovative cars such as the Laguna, Clio and Mégane. A Renault board member for four years, he received many awards, including Knight of the Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur.
Grayson Perry RA
Honorary Doctor of Arts
Grayson Perry is a thought-provoking and uncompromising artist. After graduation he began working with pottery to create a unique style which would define his career. He is best known for creating classically shaped vases covered with images and text that, from a distance, appear decorative and colourful, but which upon closer inspection reveal their dark and frequently disturbing subject matter. He received the Turner Prize in 2003.
Ellis Rich OBE
Honorary Doctor of Music
Ellis Rich's music industry career began as a copyist, transcribing work such as Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody to sheet music, but he found his skills lay as a businessman. Ellis became International Professional Manager of EMI in 1975, then in 1987 he founded The Independent Music Group, a worldwide consortium of independent music publishers. In 2011 he was awarded the first ever OBE for services to the music publishing industry.
Kanwar Deep Singh
Honorary Doctor of Business
Kanwar Deep Singh is an international business leader and pioneer. Aged 19, he founded a company in India focusing on the medical sector, which became Alchemist Limited. It aims to design cost-effective treatments for all of society while promoting fair business practices. He became one of the youngest MPs in India and is Chairman of the Central Advisory Board on Minimum Wages.
Gary Sullivan OBE
Honorary Doctor of Business
Gary is an alumnus and Chairman of construction, logistics and built environment services provider, Wilson James Ltd, which is recognised as a leader in its field and involved in a number of community initiatives. Gary is a valued supporter of the Prince's Trust and the Essex Community Foundation, and received an OBE in 2012 for his dedicated work.
Margaret Wilson
Honorary Doctor of Education
Margaret is an alumna, educational spokesperson and inspirational head teacher. Her remarkable record of achievement gained during more than 30 years in education has been put into practice at King John School which, under her leadership, has become one of the top comprehensive schools in the country. Margaret is a respected spokesperson on a wide range educational issues, influential at a national and international level.
