Soledad Veliz Córdova - Chile

I am a psychologist from Universidad de Chile and when I finished my undergraduate degree I studied Forensic Mental Health at King's College London for a year. During that time I read the book Illustrating for Children's Picture Books by Martin Salisbury. I was an independent illustrator and had never studied illustration before, but his book inspired me to apply for the programme at Anglia Ruskin. I was really glad when I was accepted and the day after I finished my thesis I moved to Cambridge.

Cambridge was an excellent city to study in and obviously my programme was extremely different from the one at King's! I learnt a lot during my studies, from the academics as well as my classmates, and enjoyed the constant supervision by the professors and the excellent relationship between the students. We took a fantastic trip to Florence to attend the Children's Book Fair and learn about the global editorial field. During that visit I realised how small the market is in Latin America compared to Europe, the USA and even Asia.

I have now moved back to Chile, where I work as a freelance children's book illustrator. I also teach at two of the best universities in the country: I teach Forensic Psychology for undergraduate students at Universidad Catolica and I work in a Centre for Technologies of Inclusion (CEDETI) at Universidad de Chile, where I am in charge of designing game illustrations for children.

I love what I do and will always be grateful for picking up that book and for discovering how to combine psychology and illustration at Anglia Ruskin.

Our Country Development Managers (CDMs) travel all over the world and try to meet as many of you as they can to support your alumni networks. Last year Alejandra Vicencio, CDM for Latin America, visited Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela. She met with Soledad in Chile and arranged for an alumni networking event at Skye Bar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In November, Alejandra had a meeting with six alumni in Mexico City to support their network and talk about their lives during and since studying at Anglia Ruskin. We hope to have Alumni Ambassadors in the region soon, so if you would like to volunteer please get in touch! Also, be sure to Like Anglia Ruskin's Latin America Facebook page at www.facebook.com/arulatinoamerica.

A new way to stay in touch

We have recently launched a new Facebook page at www.facebook.com/angliaruskinuniversityalumni. This will replace the old groups and will be regularly updated with links to University and alumni news stories, posts from the employability team, invitations to events, photos and anything fun we come across! Keep checking back for the latest updates and please use the page to communicate with us, each other, search for lost friends, or posting that picture of a funny looking cat. Make it your own!

Alumni Ambassador Jukka Aminoff has also started a Facebook page for alumni in Finland. He would love to hear from you!
