Childhood & Youth Research Institute
New partnerships with people and organisations are integral to our schedule for 2013. At the Childhood and Youth Research Institute (CYRI), networks continue to grow. Our work seeks to benefit children and young people and we are keen to hear from those who share our values of inclusion and equality.
Voice
Promotion of the voices of young people through participation projects, builds on a highly regarded body of research at Anglia Ruskin. We are working with young people as research participants as well as creating new opportunities for them to become social researchers.A dedicated Children and Young People's Voice Research Group has engaged local young people as associates and co-researchers. A special event organised by CYRI's young advisors brought together young people from different organisations to debate current political and social challenges. As part of Economic and Social Research Council Festival of Social Science, the event captured new perspectives and proposed solutions to some very challenging social issues.
Supporting Colleagues
We are supporting collaborative research within the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education. In 2012 we awarded seed grants to four Anglia Ruskin teams starting research. We continue to build capacity with colleagues, providing guidance for innovative design and assisting with applying for larger research grants.Projects have included Intergenerational Research looking at benefits and challenges of participatory arts activities (see FHSCE page); the SUPREME project promoting mental health and suicide prevention (see FHSCE page); Childcare and Services exploring childcare access by Service families; Resiliency and Wellbeing in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth creating a partnership of local organisations for future research; Children's Book Illustration Database providing a foundation for larger research applications.
Research staff are making more international connections. Dr Zoe Jaques was awarded a prestigious research fellowship form Harvard University and the British Academy sponsored Dr Darren Sharpe's visit to the University of the West Indies - as part of a two-way exchange project concerning gang and youth violence.
CYRI Steering Group
A period of change and preparation for a new Director has seen Professors Claire Cameron and Tim Waller as Interim Co-directors and the formation of a steering group to ensure further academic governance and maintain a strategic approach. Professors Ian Rivers and Stanley Tucker bring additional research profiles to this group, as well as academic and management expertise and advice about new research opportunities.Seminar Series 2013
A diverse range of guest speakers makes up the 2013 seminar programme. Professor Cecile Wright's presentation focuses on young black people and social mobility and Dr Sue Waite, a leading expert on Outdoor Education, raises the profile of outdoor play and forest schools currently represented by Tim Waller and Sue Knight. In extending a warm invitation to all, Professor Claire Cameron says: "We especially welcome alumni to join our seminar audiences and look forward to seeing you soon." Seminars are usually held in Cambridge and Chelmsford on Wednesdays from 5-7pm.
