Juan Tabernero obtained his MSc in Physics at the University of Salamanca, Spain, (2002). As a postgraduate student at the University of Murcia, Juan Tabernero's work was focused on the understanding of the compensation of aberrations between the cornea and the human lens. Using optical instruments developed at the own lab together with accurate optical modeling calculations, it was shown that the shapes of cornea and lens were perfectly accurate to generate the compensation effect. Those results were published in Nature Photonics in 2008.

After defending his PhD in December 2007, he joined Frank Schaeffel's lab in Tübingen (Germany) as a Marie Curie researcher. He worked in myopia research during 2008 and 2009. His main work was focused on building a peripheral refractometer based on photoretinoscopy for the human eye. The instrument was successfully tested and applied to a general population as well as to a group of subjects with cataract surgery.

At the beginning of 2010, Juan Tabernero re-joined the lab in Murcia where his research lines included
i) the visual testing of a non-conventional solution for presbyopia
ii) develop of a novel method to assess the dynamic stability of the human lens against saccade movements of the eye and
iii) the optical design of intraocular Galilean mini telescopes to be implanted in eyes with Age Macular Degeneration.

In May 2016 he was appointed as a Reader at the Vision and Eye Research Unit, Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (UK).

Juan Tabernero´s research articles have received more than 800 citations and an h-index of 18 (Research Gate Profile). He is also inventor of 3 international patents granted to companies of the sector and he is a co-founder, participant and member of the start-up VOPTICA. He has been a visiting researcher in some of the most prestigious visual optics lab in the world (in Germany, Holland, Australia and US).

In September 2012, Juan Tabernero was distinguished with the Carl Zeiss European Young Investigator Award, that recognises a young researcher for his distinguished scientific contribution in the wider field of ophthalmic research, including visual psychophysics, physiological and biomedical optics and the research efforts to overcome the respective optical limitations of vision.
