Anglia Ruskin University has appointed Professor Alan Sibbald as its new Deputy Vice Chancellor. He will be joining the University early in 2008.
Professor Sibbald has been at the University of East London for the last five years as a Deputy Vice Chancellor, with responsibility for research, outreach and infrastructure. He has led the development of a major investment in excess of £110m in new buildings to provide a leading-edge teaching and learning environment; and has been primarily responsible for new research, scholarship and knowledge transfer strategies. These enabled his colleagues from UEL to engage in relevant research, through multi-disciplinary research institutes, focusing on opportunities relating to the regeneration of the Thames Gateway and ‘2012’. He has also played a key role in developing UEL’s partnership network and in establishing UEL as a significant presence in international student recruitment.
Prior to moving to UEL, Professor Sibbald was at Napier University for 20 years holding a number of posts, culminating in his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing. Professor Sibbald has an international reputation for his own research in Civil Engineering; he has published widely, with a strong record in achieving external funding and supervising PhD students.
He is currently the Deputy Chair of the NHS National Services Scotland Special Health Board and has served on a number of national committees, including the Institution of Civil Engineers UK Council.
Now looking to consolidate Anglia Ruskin University’s position in the region, UK and overseas, Professor Michael Thorne commented,
His appointment will bring the Vice Chancellor’s support group up to full strength. He will be working with the Director of Finance, Rex Smith; Deputy Vice Chancellors, Professors Lesley Dobree and Helen Valentine; and University Secretary, Steve Bennett.
