Untitled Page

Develop the confidence, attitudes and skills you need to work as an operating department practitioner (ODP) in areas such as anaesthesia, intensive care, A&E, and transplant or air-ambulance teams. This is an exciting, fast-changing field with opportunities to work all over the world.

As an operating department practice (ODP) student you'll be offered a placement with one of the main hospitals within Cambridgeshire or Essex. ODP students can also be offered a placement within one of several hospitals in London.

  • Essex: Basildon, Broomfield, Colchester, Harlow, Southend and Brentwood
  • Cambridgeshire: Addenbrooke's, Hinchingbrooke, Papworth and Peterborough (all theory will be taught at Cambridge)
  • London: Chase Farm, Barnet, Whittington, North Mid, Royal Free and University College London

During your placement, you will work with surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre nurses and also patients of all ages. As a member of the operating department team, you'll be also involved in each phase of a person's operation. All students will follow a two year placement schedule for the duration of the course. This will ensure the students are exposed to a range of clinical specialities. The placements will be managed by the practice educator and monitored by the course leader and link lecturer.
