Our IELTS Preparation Course provides an excellent opportunity to prepare yourself for an IELTS exam. If you would like extra English support before you prepare, you can combine the IELTS course with additional English Language Skills support.

Course Content

The IELTS preparation class is a part-time programme and comprises of three hours per week for four weeks. You will study a total of 12 hours.

The course will help you understand the format of the exam and provide you with tips and techniques to improve your performance. You’ll also gain guidance on independent study and resources that will help you improve your language levels prior to taking the exam.

The course content includes the following:

  • Understanding the exam requirements
  • Test strategies: improving your performance
  • Focus on writing skills- accuracy, style, coherence and cohesion
  • Troubleshooting grammar issues
  • Focus on reading skills – improving speed and accuracy
  • Vocabulary building and development strategies
  • Focus on listening skills
  • Focus on fluency and speaking
  • Pronunciation support

The English Language Skills course preparation class is a part time programme and comprises of three hours per week for 4-12 weeks. You can do this as a standalone course or before an IELTS Preparation course, to improve your general English skills.

The course will help you develop more effective English for work, study, global communication or general use whatever your context.

The course content includes the following:

  • Improving your accuracy and range of grammar
  • Developing vocabulary and word use
  • Writing better
  • Speaking with confidence
  • Improving clarity and confidence with pronunciation
  • Focus on reading and listening skills

You have the option of combining an IELTS Preparation Course with some additional English language skills or you can apply for either of these programmes as a stand-alone course.

The cost of the course includes the tuition fee and some course materials. The tuition fee does not include any text books. Before the start of the course we will send you a list of suitable text books for the course.

Assessment

At the end of the course there won’t be a formal assessment but you will receive a certificate of attendance. Please note the IELTS exam is not included in the course fee. If you wish to take an IELTS at Anglia Ruskin University, we have exam centres in Cambridge, Chelmsford, Norwich, Peterborough and Bedford. (Please note that the Chelmsford test centre provides SELT exams, these need to be booked through the British Council and can be used for visa purposes when applying for an academic course).

We would recommend that you check availability of test dates, as they may get booked up during peak periods.

To apply please complete the application form and return this to lsu_shortcourses@anglia.ac.uk. If your level is IELTS 3.5 – 5.5 we recommend that you take the English Language skills prior to the IELTS Preparation course. If your level is IELTS 5.5-7.5 you can take the four week course. If you are unsure of your level please contact us and we can organise an entry test, prior to your first class.

If you would like to take the English language Skills course as a stand-alone course we recommend that you take 8 or 12 weeks of English if you have IELTS 3.5-4.0 to achieve the best outcome.

Once we have received your application form you will be sent an offer letter by email. You will need to return the acceptance slip and pay for the IELTS Preparation Course in full.

Before the start of your programme we will send you instructions on registering for the course and your course timetable.

Entry requirements

The IELTS Preparation Course is suitable if you are planning to take an IELTS examination (Academic or General) and need additional support to prepare for the exam.

If your level is IELTS 3.5 – 5.5 we recommend that you take the English Language skills prior to the IELTS Preparation course. If your level is IELTS 5.5-7.5 the 4 weeks IELTS course is possible depending on the band you hope to achieve.

If you would like to take the English language Skills course as a stand-alone course we recommend that you take 8 or 12 weeks of English if you have IELTS 3.5-4.0 to achieve the best outcome.
