Lynsey is a children’s nurse with more than 12 years' experience working in hospital and community clinical settings. Her spans cardiac critical care and intensive care, to general surgical and medical hospital units, as well as school nursing and community children’s mental health.

As a qualified children’s nurse, Lynsey has spent a large proportion of her nursing career in the Community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).

Through her CAMHS role, she became part of a specialist outreach team for children with learning disabilities, and then the CAMHS team link for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. The outreach team developed and delivered parenting courses and workshops aimed at families of children with autism and/or complex needs who were struggling with undesirable behaviours. The course incorporated elements of behavioural management, sensory processing, and emotional well-being as well as help and support with accessing appropriate education and health services.

Lynsey has also spent time in specialist cardiothoracic units and general medical, surgical and assessment units.

Research interests

  • Children’s experience of hospitalisation following trauma and the use of play
  • Child and adolescent mental health; play approaches to self-harming behaviours in looked after children

Lynsey is interested in exploring the use of play to help minimise emotional distress for children who have been hospitalised following a trauma. Wherever possible, children who need hospitalisation for an elective procedure spend time with a play specialist to explore what they may experience. However, this is often not possible for children who are admitted to hospital after a traumatic event, such as a road traffic accident or for an emergency operation. Of particular interest is the use of play with children in the days following their hospital stay or emergency operation, to help minimise any distress felt or experienced by the child in helping them process the event.

Levels of self-harming behaviours in children who are looked after are often high, and Luynsey is also interested in exploring therapeutic play approaches in the care setting to help minimise these behaviours, and help foster families understand them further.
