After qualification as a registered adult nurse in 1996 Alice completed a two year part-time BSc (Hons) Health Studies at Colchester Institute before moving on to complete an MSc in 2003. Her research focus for the programme was directed at interprofessional involvement in discharge planning and contributed to the hospital reorganisation of discharge planning services. A specialist nurse in Cardiac Rehabilitation confirmed the interest in patient and staff teaching and she moved into a part-time role at Anglia Polytechnic University in 2005.

Since joining the academic staff at the university, now Anglia Ruskin University Alice has facilitated several groups of pre-registration nurses through to qualification; supporting them as personal and academic tutor which she has found very rewarding. Subject specialism has developed leading modules focusing on the role of nurse specialists, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, cardiac care and understanding and responding to acute care needs. Links with clinical nursing practice have continued through Link Tutor work with the Mid Essex independent sector.

Ensuring patient safety is a key priority in healthcare educational programmes, and is vital if standards are to be upheld and conveyed to developing healthcare practitioners. Nurses are at the forefront of patient care and therefore are well positioned to drive these agenda forward and strengthen the safety net for patient care. Current research awaiting publication considers evaluation of two themes from the The Multi-Professional Patient Safety Curriculum Guide, launched by the World Health Organisation to help develop a patient safety friendly curriculum in health education.
