Background

Tim Waller has extensive experience in the field and study of early childhood education and has worked in higher education for over twenty years. Previously he taught in nursery, infant and primary schools in London and has also worked in the USA. Tim is a Convener of the Outdoor Learning SIG in the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) and an active member of the Early Years SIG in the British Educational Research Association (BERA). Tim has considerable experience of research and project management and is currently leading the EU Project 'Young Children, Public Spaces and Democracy' (BRIC), which involves preschool children and teachers in England, Italy and Sweden (2015-17). Previous projects include the SUPREME project (Suicide Prevention by Internet and Media Based Mental Health Promotion) aimed at developing an internet-based mental health promotion and suicide prevention programme, targeting young people aged 14 to 24. Tim was also Co-Director of the Longitudinal Evaluation of the Role and Impact of Early Years Professionals (in England) - commissioned by the Children's Workforce Development Council (2009-12).

Tim has a longstanding interest in outdoor play and learning and since 2003 he has been coordinating an ongoing research project designed to investigate children's perspectives of their outdoor play. The Outdoor Learning project has involved developing and using a range of 'participatory' methods for research with young children and investigating the potential of parental and community involvement in early childhood education. This project has also generated regular articles and papers (see below). In addition, his research interests also include well-being, pedagogy and social justice leading to the development of the Young Children, Public Spaces and Democracy Project (BRIC), funded by the EU from 2015-17.

Areas of research supervision

  • Current PhD supervision includes: Outdoor play and learning in early childhood, peer relations in early childhood settings, environmental education and special needs in the primary school, children's rights, leadership in schools, the rights of young people in Nigeria and transformative education policy in Nepal.
  • Recent completions include: Participatory research with young children in early childhood settings, parental involvement in nursery education, outdoor play and learning in early years settings and children's rights.

Teaching

  • Tim contributes to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes focussing mainly on aspects of early childhood, early childhood education and research methods.
