The South African network of Business Development Support Organizations (BDSOs) together with the project partners were used to recruit the businesses. Potential recruits were requested to upload a short video of their business and their objectives in seeking to travel to the UK. A total of 32 applications were received, from which 21 were interviewed resulting in 15 invited to pitch to the project team. After a two-day selection panel, 11 businesses were selected to attend the bootcamp.
The week-long bootcamp, hosted by Stellenbosch University in January 2014, included a mix of formal input, interactive sessions and a final day pitch to a panel of entrepreneurs.
The week resulted in the final selection of businesses for the UK visit. The project team then spent 12 weeks working closely with these entrepreneurs to better understand their objectives and prepare appropriate business meetings for the UK visit.
