Company Profile

The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the oldest independent air force in the world and forms the aerial warfare service branch of the British Armed Forces. RAF Medics provide an essential service of clinical and medical work at home and abroad to both RAF staff and civilians. They might be called at any moment to warring or peaceful territories with little time to plan for the time they are away.

Our challenge

Service personnel on active duty would find studying for a standard course extremely difficult if they were required to attend lectures and seminars on campus. The short-notice time given before they are sent on a campaign means that students could easily fall behind on their studies if they missed lectures or tutorials. They also needed something that fits with the existing training provision seamlessly, so that existing learning could be accredited and used towards them getting a degree.

Our solution

We now work with the RAF to deliver work-based learning for their Medics across the world. All of the courses for the RAF Medics are delivered entirely online via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Wherever students may be based during their studies, at home or posted abroad, we offer a comprehensive package of student support to help maximise their potential and successfully complete their course. We have accredited existing RAF Medic training programmes meaning students can use APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) to enter the degree courses at a higher level.

What the RAF say

"We currently have RAF Medics working in the Falklands, Afghanistan and numerous other countries around the world, as well as in the UK. We have an education centre at our base in Kandahar where RAF Medics will be able to access this course via the internet. In fact, when RAF Medics are on postings such as Afghanistan, studying for an online degree is a perfect way of filling their downtime.

"Anglia Ruskin offers a range of quality Health and Social Care courses, which were exactly what we were looking for. We then visited the University and were incredibly impressed by the excellent facilities on offer."
