So it’s been rather a busy month in my life as a child nursing student. I have finished my short placement on the neonatal unit, I put together and presented my assignment on health promotion, and I have now started on my next placement with the school nurses.

Untitled PageHopefully, from now until the end of term, things will be a little calmer and I won’t have the threat of a looming assignment deadline hanging over my head!

On finishing my time at the neonatal unit towards the start of this month, I was able to realise just how much I had gained from my placement there. I had taken the responsibility of having my own patients and took care of them for the entire shift – from giving handovers and writing thorough notes, to learning about the new set of documentation that went with the setting. I learnt about how to do newborn resuscitation and then witnessed this in action at the delivery of a 28-week gestation baby. I saw and got involved in the care of babies on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This is a step down from a ventilator as the baby is working to take breaths themselves but the machine is creating a constant pressure to keep the neonate’s tiny airways open. I learnt how this is cycled in 12-hour periods with time on and off the CPAP to gently wean them off requiring it. I also enjoyed experiencing a different ward environment and seeing the subtle differences that staff took in their approach to working. Although I am still not sold on eventually working in the neonatal unit, I have definitely appreciated the value of having a placement in this setting.

After finishing on the neonatal ward, I then focused all of my time on researching and creating my presentation for our health promotion module. Being a bit of a last-minute girl, I did some long hours in the library to make sure that it would all be done. And it was…just about!

I  ended up making part of my presentation in the wee hours of the morning and, despite always wanting to be one of these people who has their assignment finished and submitted at least a week before deadline, that hasn’t ever (and I think it’s safe to say, won’t ever) be me. I didn’t have enough time to practise how long the presentation would take and so was cut off before I could present one of the learning outcomes, probably losing out on marks because of it.

Lastly, I have just started out at my new community placement with the school nurses; I’m only in my second week, but so far so good! Already there is such a difference to the hospital wards and it is nice to be back in the community again. I’ll be able to fill you in a lot more next month when I have been with them for a bit longer, at the moment it is half-term, so very quiet!
