I’m just putting it out there that I am completely gob smacked at how fast this first year has gone. How far we’ve all come in what seems like an incredibly short space of time! From walking into Helmore on our first day and meeting everyone for the first time, to our development in trimester one and finally going out on the road in February.
There have been many meltdown moments, moments of ‘yes!’ and moments of utter hilarity. Particularly when one course mate asked me if eyelids grew back! …. (They don’t).
September is looming which means becoming a 2nd year Student Paramedic. This means more responsibility, more autonomy in placement and ultimately; more essays to write.
This year has given me so much; new found confidence, knowledge, friends and a sense of independence. I love being a paramedic student, I feel proud when I tell people what I do and I feel a sense of accomplishment when I do something independently.
People often ask why I’ve chosen the degree pathway versus the in house pathway. I chose the BSc Paramedic Science because I feel that you get a greater depth of knowledge when you do a degree, you go right down to cellular level with lots of systems and learn the ‘how’ behind the ‘why’. It also opens doors for you post-qualification. I am able to progress onto a masters and beyond. Increasing my chances of being able to progress to an advanced clinician. I have no regrets of any decision I have made this year, in fact, I would dare say this is one of the best decisions of my life.
