Crossing borders, creating borders: The quest for identity in Rosa Ribas’ crime fiction

7 November 2016, 18:00 - 20:00
Cambridge campus

Guest speaker: Dr. Alexandra Simon-López, University of Eastern Finland

Dr Simon-López's paper will concentrate on the Spanish novelist Rosa Ribas who lives in Frankfurt am Main and has published four crime novels that focus on bi-lingual German-Spanish Chief Inspector Cornelia Weber-Tejedor. In particular, she will discuss how identity is constructed in these novels from first-generation guestworkers to second-generation transnationalists. What do we learn about the difficulties and challenges of Spaniards moving to Germany? How were their lives in Spain before migration and how did migration changed their Spanishness? Special consideration will be given to the "fictive we" of the nation which "is forged with, through, and against other nations" (Stam/Shohat 2009: 475)
